Roscommon County Council, in partnership with Westmeath County Council is currently in the early stages of developing a greenway linking Athlone, Ballyleague / Lanesborough and Roscommon Town.

The Strategy for the Future Development of National and Regional Greenways document from the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport (DTTAS) defines a greenway as a recreational or pedestrian corridor for non-motorised journeys, developed in an integrated manner which enhances both the environment and quality of life of the surrounding area. These routes should meet satisfactory standards of width, gradient and surface condition to ensure that they are both user-friendly and low-risk for users of all abilities. The Strategy for the Future Development of National and Regional Greenways is linked under the Publications tab of this website.

The objective of the Strategy for the Future Development of National and Regional Greenways is to assist in the strategic development of nationally and regionally significant greenways in appropriate locations constructed to an appropriate standard in order to deliver a quality experience for all greenways users. The Strategy for the Future Development of National and Regional Greenways is linked under the Publications tab of this website.

Significant consideration is always given to the impact of the proposed routes on private property and land. While efforts will be undertaken to reduce the impact of the greenway on private property and land, there is always the potential that some private property and land may need to be acquired to develop the greenway. It is intended that this land will be acquired by voluntary agreement as far as possible in line with TII’s Code of Practice for National and Regional Greenways. The Code of Best Practice for National and Regional Greenways and associated Greenway Sustainability Payment document is linked under the Publications tab of this website.

The Five S criteria are outlined in the Strategy for the Future Development of National and Regional Greenways.
